A central base to explore Cornwall

A mile or two from Bodmin, we are central to most places in Cornwall, and a similar distance to either coast. The north coast is brilliant for surfing and dramatic coastline whereas the south coast generally has safer calmer beaches for sheltered coves, families and paddling, both have amazing coastal walks. We have found that if the weather isn’t ideal on one coast, head to the other coast and it is usually totally different.

Bodmin Town

Bodmin was historically the county town of Cornwall and has some historical places of interest including Bodmin Jail, now a visitor attraction and hotel, built in 1779 and used as a template for the modern prison system today, Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway and Lanhydrock House, the 'jewel of the National Trust' only a mile or so away with miles of woodland trails and formal gardens. The surrounding countryside is some of the best farmland in Cornwall.

Bodmin Moor

 An 80 square mile moorland with rich folklore, archaeological sites and places of interest such as Jamaica Inn, The Cheesewring and The Hurlers, Brown Willy and Rough Tor, the highest points in Cornwall and Goliath Falls.

Cycling

The Camel Trail is a largely flat, 18 mile traffic-free, surfaced route along a disused railway line, routes include Bodmin to Wenford Bridge (6 1/4 miles) and Bodmin to Padstow (12 miles).

Cardinham Woods, a Forestry Commission site, have trails for mountain biking, walks, picnic spots, a cafe and seasonally an ice cream stall.

Places to visit with children 

There are lots of different attractions for children and families within a short drive, some of our favourites include Lappa Valley, Camel Creek and Trethorne. 

The Dragon Leisure Centre is also a few minutes away with a swimming pool and gym.

Getting around

There is plenty of parking available at the farm and you can park right next to the cottage. Lidcutt is approximately one mile from the town. There is a bus service in the town which goes to Truro & the railway station. There are two railway stations - the main London to Penzance route runs through Bodmin Parkway station which is 4 miles away and the Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway runs from the town to Bodmin Parkway. There are plenty of reasonably priced taxi services in the town. Bodmin is at the centre of the cycle Hub which runs from the north to the south coast, and bike hire is available from the cycle hub.
